Works Achieved At Cordwainers College as Systems Administrator between 1995 and 2000

Every student and staff member has their own E-Mail address.
Addresses are friendly, i.e. chris.barnes@cordwainers.ac.uk

All Student PCs in the IT Centre and Library have HTTP Internet access and E-Mail access.
95% of Networked PCs have E-Mail access (Local and Internet messaging)
90% of Admin PCs have HTTP Internet access with 100% by Start of 1999 academic year

"	1 User ID and Password for all Network resources.
"	User ID for students is Enrolment Number (Currently Exported from Covtech)
"	Enrolment Number is Library ID
"	Enrolment Number is printed as Alphanumeric and Code 39 Bar Code on all ID cards.
"	The Library admin Terminals are equiped with bar code Readers

All staff have a User ID which follows the same rules as students, but is based on a counter field of an Access database containing names and Addresses of Staff.

Every Student has a Macintosh and PC fileserver account which is the name of their User ID
PCs can read the Mac Fileserver for Cross-platform exchange of Files.

99% of PCs run Word6 to ensure in-house document compatability.
Paradox DBMS has been almost completely phased out in favour of Access 2.0
90% of Networked databases use Access 2.0 and Access 2.0 Runtime.
Cordwainers will move All Admin Computers to Office97 or Office2000 at the same time.

All IT equipment is tracked and logged to the component level.
IT Equipment is tracked against Order Number for auditing purposes (see attached IT stock Check)
Logs are kept of Software faults and modifications.
A detailed schematic diagram of the Entire LAN is kept up to date
All of the main admin servers are protected by a UPS.

SPECIFIC FEATURES

LAN Infrastructure

(Local Area Network)

Since 1996 the College has been involved in the design, implementation, maintenance and expansion of a LAN cabling Infrastructure based on IEEE LAN standards, taking into account projected growth of
services and increase in traffic flow.

The Cabling types in use are:

100 Base TX
10 BaseT
10 Base2
10 Base FL

A TCP/IP Class C LAN addressing scheme is in place with 4 Subnetworks
The College has elected to use Static IP addressing until further notice.
The College is running IPX, TCP/IP,NetBEUI and Apple Talk Protocols
The College plans to phase out NetBEUI

For Security and Traffic reasons:
The IT Centre Pcs are on a routed ip segment with Router Access to some resources on the rest of the Network. (WWW and E-Mail)
The IT Centre Macs are on an Apple Talk routed Segment with no access to the admin Network.

The ITC Macintosh and PC servers are accessible from any computer in the College, bar some of the older CAD/CAM systems in Room 62
